❞ رواية Crime and Punishment ❝ ⏤ Fyodor Dostoyevsky

The story was conceived by the author when he lost his fortune in gambling and was unable to lead a basic life. Rodion Raskolnikov an ex-student in St. Petersburg plots and executes the killing of a pawnbroker and elderly woman named Alyona Ivanovna and her half-sister Lizaveta, an eyewitness of the murder. Shaken by his own actions and in contrast to his plot for the crime for ransom, he flees with a handful of items leaving sizeable wealth.

Raskolnikov, an impoverished student living in the St. Petersburg of the tsars, is determined to overreach his humanity and assert his untrammeled individual will. When he commits an act of murder and theft, he sets into motion a story that, for its excruciating suspense, its atmospheric vividness, and its depth of characterization and vision is almost unequaled in the literatures of the world. Award-winning translators Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky render this elusive and wildly innovative novel with an energy, suppleness, and range of voice that do full justice to the genius of its creator.

The landlady who provided him with garret, dinners, and attendance, lived on the floor below, and every time he went out he was obliged to pass her kitchen, the door of which invariably stood open.
