Introduction to the Use of Robotic Tools for Search and Rescue
A significant contribution has been made to the development of multi-robot cooperative methodologies for Wilderness Search and Rescue WiSAR. WiSAR involves the search for a possibly mobile but non-trackable lost person i. We have proposed a methodology that can autonomously coordinate the search strategy of a multi-robot team in wilderness environments by using very limited knowledge of the target, and by employing readily available information like terrain data to conduct the search. The curves adapt to both terrain topology, as well as target psychology and physiology. In addition, domain expert knowledge can also be used to orient the curve in likely directions of travel. Designing Search and Rescue Robots towards Realistic User Requirements
In the event of a large crisis think about typhoon Haiyan or the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan , a primordial task of the rescue services is the search for human survivors on the incident site. This is a complex and dangerous task, which often leads to loss of lives among the human crisis managers themselves. The introduction of unmanned search and rescue devices can offer a valuable tool to save human lives and to speed up the search and rescue process. A main factor which explains why there is so little robotic technology applied on the terrain in real-life search and rescue operations, is that the complex nature and difficult operating conditions of search and rescue operations pose heavy constraints on the mechanical design of the unmanned platforms. In this paper, we discuss the different user requirements which have an impact of the design of the mechanical systems air, ground and marine robots. We show how these user requirements are obtained, how they are validated, how they lead to design specifications for operational prototypes which are tested in realistic operational conditions and we show how the final mechanical design specifications are derived from these different steps. An important aspect of all these design steps which is emphasized in this paper is to always keep the end-users in this case the search and rescue workers in the loop in order to come to realistic requirements and mechanical design specifications, ensuring the practical deployability of the developed platforms.
Frequent natural disasters and man-made catastrophes have threatened the safety of citizens and have attracted much more attention. The rescue mission under disaster environment is very complicated and dangerous for a rescue team. Search and rescue SAR robots can not only improve the efficiency of rescue operations but also reduce the casualty of rescuers. Robots can help rescue teams and even replace rescuers to perform dangerous missions. Search and rescue robots will play a more and more important role in the rescue operations. A survey of the research status of search and rescue robots in Japan, USA, China and other countries has been provided.

Springer Handbook of Robotics pp Cite as. In order to summarize the status of rescue robotics, this chapter will cover the basic characteristics of disasters and their impact on robotic design, describe the robots actually used in disasters to date, promising robot designs e. The Chapter will concentrate on the rescue phase, not recovery, with the understanding that capabilities for rescue can be applied to, and extended for, the recovery phase. The use of robots in the prevention and preparedness phases of disaster management are outside the scope of this chapter. Skip to main content.
Modern search and rescue workers are equipped with a powerful toolkit to address natural and man-made disasters. This introductory chapter explains how a new tool can be added to this toolkit: robots. The use of robotic assets in search and rescue operations is explained and an overview is given of the worldwide efforts to incorporate robotic tools in search and rescue operations. The ICARUS project proposes to equip first responders with a comprehensive and integrated set of unmanned search and rescue tools, to increase the situational awareness of human crisis managers, such that more work can be done in a shorter amount of time.
Search and rescue SAR operations pose grave risk to human lives, both to victims and those sent in to save them. Robots are being developed and increasingly used in SAR missions to help cut costs and improve efficiency. Timing is everything when lives are on the line, and these machines can not only reduce the duration of these missions, but also arm SAR teams with an arsenal of information, which helps them arrive on-site quicker. SAR teams are tasked with exploring extensive areas in a short period of time to find those trapped or stranded after disasters.

Human-robot interactions during the robot-assisted urban search and rescue response at the World Trade Center Abstract: The World Trade Center WTC rescue response provided an unfortunate opportunity to study the human-robot interactions HRI during a real unstaged rescue for the first time.
In the past decade the number of people killed by natural disasters each year has ranged from as low as 14, in to as high as , in , according to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Every year over ,, people are also affected by natural disasters. Government, companies, and aid organizations are all working to keep these tragic deaths as low as possible.
Branesh M. Several researchers have revealed the huge potentials of rescue robots in disaster zones. In addition to searching for victims, these intelligent machines are also effective in obtaining useful information from the zones. These functions help to optimize the search and rescue missions. However, the fact that rescue robots have to operate in risky and dangerous environments necessitates the need for such machines to have an efficient motion control system, which can help them to operate autonomously or with minimal human control.
