Nuclear reactor , any of a class of devices that can initiate and control a self-sustaining series of nuclear fission s.

This page is about the main conventional types of nuclear reactor.

Nuclear reactor , any of a class of devices that can initiate and control a self-sustaining series of nuclear fission s. Nuclear reactors are used as research tools, as systems for producing radioactive isotope s, and most prominently as energy sources for nuclear power plants. Nuclear reactors operate on the principle of nuclear fission, the process in which a heavy atomic nucleus splits into two smaller fragments.

Nuclear plants split atoms to heat water into steam. The steam turns a turbine to generate electricity. In most power plants, you need to spin a turbine to generate electricity. Coal, natural gas, oil and nuclear energy use their fuel to turn water into steam and use that steam to turn the turbine.

The nuclear reactors currently operating in the United States are either boiling water reactors or pressurized water reactors. The names can be a bit misleading: Both use steam to power a generator, but the difference is how they create it. Innovative entrepreneurs and startups are developing new types of reactors to be more efficient and flexible in operations, reach remote and developing areas, reduce—and possibly even recycle—waste, and even turn seawater into drinking water.

A nuclear reactor is like an enormous, high-tech tea kettle. Nuclear plants are different because they do not burn anything to create steam. Instead, they split uranium atoms in a process called fission. As a result, unlike other energy sources, nuclear power plants do not release carbon or pollutants like nitrogen and sulfur oxides into the air. Nuclear reactors are designed to sustain an ongoing chain reaction of fission; they are filled with a specially designed, solid uranium fuel and surrounded by water, which facilitates the process.

When the reactor starts, uranium atoms will split, releasing neutrons and heat. Those neutrons will hit other uranium atoms causing them to split and continue the process, generating more neutrons and more heat. This heat is used to create the steam that will spin a turbine, which powers a generator to make electricity. Two Types of Reactors in the United States The nuclear reactors currently operating in the United States are either boiling water reactors or pressurized water reactors.

A boiling water reactor heats up the water in the reactor until it boils into steam and spins the turbine. A pressurized water reactor heats up the water in the reactor too. New Nuclear Reactor Technology Innovative entrepreneurs and startups are developing new types of reactors to be more efficient and flexible in operations, reach remote and developing areas, reduce—and possibly even recycle—waste, and even turn seawater into drinking water.

Several of these new designs do not use water for cooling; instead they use other materials like liquid metal, molten salt or helium to transfer heat to a separate supply of water and make steam. SMRs are advanced reactors that produce megawatts or less of electricity. Some advanced reactors will operate at higher temperatures or lower pressures than traditional nuclear reactors.

They also will offer other applications like water desalination and hydrogen production. Other reactors will be very fuel efficient by producing less waste or by having extended fuel cycles and not having to stop and refuel for a decade or more. Related Content. Is Nuclear Energy Safe? Nuclear reactor

A nuclear reactor , formerly known as an atomic pile , is a device used to initiate and control a fission nuclear chain reaction or nuclear fusion reactions. Nuclear reactors are used at nuclear power plants for electricity generation and in nuclear marine propulsion. Heat from nuclear fission is passed to a working fluid water or gas , which in turn runs through steam turbines. These either drive a ship's propellers or turn electrical generators ' shafts. Nuclear generated steam in principle can be used for industrial process heat or for district heating.

Published Jul 27, Updated Jan 29, Atoms are constructed like miniature solar systems. At the center of the atom is the nucleus; orbiting around it are electrons. The nucleus is composed of protons and neutrons, very densely packed together. Hydrogen, the lightest element, has one proton; the heaviest natural element, uranium, has 92 protons.

Nuclear power plants produce electricity from the heat created when atoms are split within a nuclear reactor. This process is called fission. Uranium is the fuel most widely used in nuclear reactors at power plants. Nuclear energy is created when uranium atoms are split in a process called fission. Fission releases a tremendous amount of energy in the form of heat.

A nuclear reactor or nuclear power plant consists of nuclear reactor fuel, control Most nuclear electricity is generated using just two kinds of reactor which were developed in the s and improved since. Components of a nuclear reactor In light water reactors the water moderator functions also as primary coolant.

Power Nuclear Plant. As a number of countries continue to move away from high-polluting fossil fuels towards low-carbon alternatives, the dynamic of how and where power plants operate is constantly changing. Nuclear, coal and wind are just three types of energy that are used to generate electricity in power plants across the world.

Nuclear power plants are a type of power plant that use the process of nuclear fission in order to generate electricity. They do this by using nuclear reactors in combination with the Rankine cycle , where the heat generated by the reactor converts water into steam , which spins a turbine and a generator. Aside from the source of heat , nuclear power plants are very similar to coal-fired power plants. However, they require different safety measures since the use of nuclear fuel has vastly different properties from coal or other fossil fuels. They get their thermal power from splitting the nuclei of atoms in their reactor core, with uranium being the dominant choice of fuel in the world today. Thorium also has potential use in nuclear power production, however it is not currently in use. Below is the basic operation of a boiling water power plant , which shows the many components of a power plant, along with the generation of electricity.
