We then present recent advances in transgenerational epigenetics in birds, which involve germline linked non-Mendelian inheritance, underline the advantages and drawbacks of working on birds in this field and comment on future directions of transgenerational studies in bird species. A portion of the variability of complex traits is affected by interactions with the environment, through epigenetic phenomena [ 1 , 2 ]. Thus, besides genetic variability, external influences that affect early life stages pre and postnatal can have enormous consequences on the adult phenotype [ 3 ].
