Climate change events cause erratic spatial and temporal variability in rainfall, temperature, humidity, etc. At the same time, water availability is also under pressure due to climate change and overexploitation of water resources. In a monsoonal climate that is already erratic and highly seasonal in nature, this increased variability due to climate change will further impact water availability and salt water intrusion.

India is a vast country and is highly diversified in terms of natural resources and socio-economic setup.

Interlinking of River: Issues and Challenges

The interlinking of river project is a Civil Engineering project, which aims to connect Indian rivers through reservoirs and canals. The farmers will not have to depend on the monsoon for cultivation and also the excess or lack of water can be overcome during flood or drought. You will be surprised to know that India has approx four percent of the water available, and India's population is around 16 percent of the world's population. But every year, hundreds of millions of cubic cusec water flows into the ocean and India has to meet its needs with only 4 percent of the water. Every project has two aspects, but we should focus on how much more people will get benefit from this project. This article is based on the interlinking of the river project, in which its history and the benefits of this project are explained.

It comprises of 30 links to connect 37 Himalayan and peninsular rivers. The elevation of peninsular India is higher in comparison of northern plains. India receives most of its rain during monsoon season from June to September, most of it falls in northern and eastern part of India, the amount of rainfall in southern and western part are comparatively low.

The Indian Rivers Inter-link is a proposed large-scale civil engineering project that aims to effectively manage water resources in India by linking Indian rivers by a network of reservoirs and canals to enhance irrigation and groundwater recharge , reduce persistent floods in some parts and water shortages in other parts of India. The Inter-link project has been split into three parts: a northern Himalayan rivers inter-link component, a southern Peninsular component and starting , an intrastate rivers linking component. NWDA has studied and prepared reports on 14 inter-link projects for Himalayan component, 16 inter-link projects for Peninsular component and 37 intrastate river linking projects. The average rainfall in India is about 4, billion cubic metres, but most of India's rainfall comes over a 4-month period — June through September. Furthermore, the rain across the very large nation is not uniform, the east and north gets most of the rain, while the west and south get less.
