Novel therapeutic approaches replacing the inefficient antibiotics are in high demand to overcome increasing microbial multidrug resistance.

However, excess and uncontrolled use of antibiotic agents has caused a significant growth in the number of drug resistant pathogens. Novel therapeutic approaches replacing the inefficient antibiotics are in high demand to overcome increasing microbial multidrug resistance. In the recent years, ongoing research has focused on development of nano-scale objects as efficient antimicrobial therapies. Among the various nanoparticles, silver nanoparticles have gained much attention due to their unique antimicrobial properties.

However, concerns about the synthesis of these materials such as use of precursor chemicals and toxic solvents, and generation of toxic byproducts have led to a new alternative approach, green synthesis. This eco-friendly technique incorporates use of biological agents, plants or microbial agents as reducing and capping agents. Silver nanoparticles synthesized by green chemistry offer a novel and potential alternative to chemically synthesized nanoparticles.

In this review, we discuss the recent advances in green synthesis of silver nanoparticles, their application as antimicrobial agents and mechanism of antimicrobial mode of action. Study on Synthesis and Antibacterial Properties of Ag NPs/GO Nanocomposites

Graphene, a well-defined two-dimensional honeycomb structure of carbon atoms with sp 2 bond [ 1 ], has attracted a great deal of attention due to its outstanding electronic, thermal, and mechanical properties, which lead to their promising applications in nanoelectronics, conductive thin films, supercapacitors, biosensors, and nanomedicine fields [ 2 — 7 ]. Its hydrophilic ability contributes to forming stable colloidal dispersions in water [ 10 ]. Moreover, those functional groups have been confirmed to own reducibility [ 11 ] and have been actively used to build new composites [ 12 — 15 ]. Silver Ag has been known as an antibacterial agent for centuries. Due to their promising antibacterial capability, Ag NPs are often used as pharmaceutical gents, antiseptic, and disinfectant [ 18 — 20 ]. Meanwhile, many studies have shown that monodispersed Ag NPs with small size are desirable for the antibacterial control system, because of the powerful cell penetration and high specific surface area [ 21 , 22 ].

Utility of silver metal in antimicrobial therapy is an accepted practice since ages that faded with time because of the identification of a few silver resistant strains in the contemporary era. A successive development of antibiotics soon followed. In this review, we have focused on the green routes for the synthesis of AgNPs, the mode of microbial inhibition by AgNPs, synergistic effect of AgNPs with antibiotics and future challenges for the development of nano-silver-based therapeutics. The later half of twentieth century has witnessed an evolutionary phenomenon of antibiotic resistance. This unique occurance was acknowledgement in the late with the identification of penicillin resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae Goldstein Coupled with an indiscriminate, unrestricted and uncapped consumption of antibiotics, the development in these highly evolved superbugs has rendered a whole generation of antibiotics less effective Fair and Tor ; Friedman et al.

The nanoparticles were characterized using transmission electron microscopy TEM , dynamic light scattering DLS , X-ray diffraction XRD , and ultraviolet—visible UV—Vis absorption spectroscopy; the antibacterial activity was assessed using the standard microdilution method, determining the minimum inhibitory concentration MIC according to the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards. The sizes of the silver nanoparticles were controlled by varying some experimental conditions. It was found that the antibacterial activity of the nanoparticles varies when their size diminishes. Different biological methods are gaining recognition for the production of silver nanoparticles Ag-NPs due to their multiple applications. One of the most important applications of Ag-NPs is their use as an anti-bacterial agent. The use of plants in the synthesis of nanoparticles emerges as a cost effective and eco-friendly approach.

Silver nanoparticles AgNPs were synthesized using apple extract as a reducing agent and aqueous silver nitrate as the precursor. The AgNPs formation was observed as a color change of the mixture from colorless to dark-brownish. The X-ray diffraction pattern confirmed the presence of only Ag crystallites, and the dynamic light scattering estimates the average sizes of the AgNPs to be Furthermore, Fourier Transform Infrared as well as UV-vis spectroscopy identifies ethylene groups as the reducing agent and capping agent for the formation of the AgNPs.     The silver nanoparticles were found to exhibit antibacterial effects at low concentrations. The antibacterial properties were related to the total surface area of the nanoparticles. Smaller particles with a larger surface to volume ratio provided a more efficient means for antibacterial activity.
