Choice Motivates Students When Rewards and Punishment Don't Work

School discipline relates to the actions taken by a teacher or the school organization towards a student or group of students when the student's behavior disrupts the ongoing educational activity or breaks a rule created by the school. Discipline can guide the children's behavior or set limits to help them learn to take better care of themselves, other people and the world around them. School systems set rules, and if students break these rules they are subject to discipline. These rules may, for example, define the expected standards of school uniform, punctuality, social conduct, and work ethic. The term "discipline" is applied to the punishment that is the consequence of breaking the rules. The aim of discipline is to set limits restricting certain behaviors or attitudes that are seen as harmful or against school policies, educational norms, school traditions, etc.

This paper will focus on a discussion of the effects of rewards and punishments on behavior and learning. Teachers will be interested to learn that not all research points to the credibility of a system of rewards and punishments. Sometimes, we as educators, struggle to find the most effective method of classroom management and turn to a system of rewards and punishments. But, if this method is not working, then we need to look elsewhere. There is a new approach to classroom management which will be discussed in this paper. For the purposes of this paper, I observed student's behavior when responding to a system of both rewards and punishments and also when given exposure to the new approach.

The behaviorism and social cultural theory perspectives to punishment are also discussed in this paper. The reformation, retribution, deterrence, attribution and social control theories of punishment are also identified and comprehensively explained. On the other hand, the paper points out the arguments put forward by those who support and oppose the use of punishment in both homes and schools. The important tips in using punishment, the impacts of punishment on student learning as well as various alternatives to corporal punishment are also examined in this paper.
